UHV Men’s Soccer Makes National Poll

A UHV team is back in the national polls. The University of Houston-Victoria men’s soccer team received votes Tuesday in the first regular-season NAIA Men’s Soccer Coaches’ Top 25 Poll.

The Jaguars (1-1) received seven votes in the latest poll and are the lone Red River Athletic Conference team listed in the poll.

Defending national champion Wayland Baptist University, behind 15 first-place votes, retained the top spot in the poll with 496 points, while Baker (Kan.), with two first-place votes, moved from No. 10 to No. 2 with 476 points.

William Carey (Miss.) received one first-place vote and moved from No. 5 to No. 3 in the poll, while Oklahoma Wesleyan fell from No. 3 to No. 4 and Missouri Valley fell from No. 2 to No. 5.

The Jaguars retained their top ranking in the RRAC poll, followed by Our Lady of the Lake, LSU-Alexandria and Houston St. Thomas.

The Jaguars will host Mid America Christian in their home opener on Friday at 3:30 p.m. at The Cage on the UHV campus.
LISBON, Portugal (AP) – Benfica says it will fight corruption charges that could lead to the Portuguese soccer club being banned from competition.

The Lisbon attorney general’s office says it is charging Benfica in connection with alleged attempts to gain access to magistrates’ investigations involving the club or its league rivals.

Apart from the club, the public prosecutor is also charging two court clerks.

A judge must now decide if the public prosecutor’s evidence is enough to take the case to trial. A verdict could take years in the notoriously slow Portuguese legal system.

The Portuguese soccer federation’s disciplinary committee said Wednesday it has launched its own investigation after the prosecutors’ charges became public.

The charges relate to the last two seasons.

Benfica is in the group stage of the Champions League.
