UHV Men’s and Women’s Soccer Begin 2018 Preseason Training

Both UHV’s men’s and women’s soccer teams hit the field for practice for the first time Tuesday, with the men’s side returning four seniors and the women’s side five. The women, coming off a 2017 season that saw them post a 4-9 record overall, hit the turf first as they look to bond with a roster that features 23 new incoming players.

“Just carry on, help them out whenever they need help,” said senior captain Lauren Leslie when asked about her role as a mentor on the team. “Just from day one, make sure the team is bonding right from the start so we can get ready in conference and get our wins.”

The men’s team, meanwhile, coming off a record breaking season a year ago, in which they won the NAIA’s Red River Conference for the first time in school history with an 11-3-2 overall record, and a 7-1-2 mark in-conference. The Jaguars made it all the way to the NAIA National Championship Tournament, losing in the first round to the University of Mobile. Despite the impressive campaign, the men were left unranked in the NAIA’s Men’s Soccer Coaches’ Preseason Top 25 Poll.

“I don’t get too caught up in all that,” head coach Adrian Rigby said during the practice.

The men will open their 2018 regular season on September 1st against McPherson, while the Lady Jaguars will travel to Oklahoma Wesleyan, ranked 13th in the Preseason Women’s Poll.
