UHV hosts Eddie Payton as guest speaker

As part of the UHV Claud Jacobs Invitational weekend, UHV had Eddie Payton as the guest speaker for the opening banquet on Saturday. Payton is a former NFL player, longtime-golf coach at Jackson State University, and the brother of NFL Hall of Famer Walter Payton.

Eddie was a running back at JSU before playing in the NFL from 1977-1982. He was signed undrafted by the Cleveland Browns and also played for the Detroit Lions, Kansas City Chiefs and Minnesota Vikings.

After the NFL, Eddie coached at his alma mater, Jackson State, for 30 years before retiring. He led the men and women’s golf teams to a combined 41 conference championships. Both groups also became the first teams from an HBCU to compete in the NCAA National Golf Championships.

He has been inducted into the JSU Sports Hall of Fame, the National Black Golf Hall of Fame, the Marion County Sports Hall of Fame and the SWAC Hall of Fame.
