UHV Baseball, Softball Face Weekend Action

Jaguars Have Scrimmages

UHV sports, with its first big weekend of 2019 set.
Jaguar softball, getting an opportunity Friday and Saturday to play junior colleges. The Jaguars, who begin the season receiving votes in the NAIA preseason coaches’ poll, will take part in the Galveston College Invitational. UHV will play three exhibition games on Friday and two more on Saturday. I asked two Jaguars how ready they are to play games.

Said third baseman Angel Davidson, “It’ll be exciting. Just going out here the last two weeks, working really hard to figure all of our pieces and get everything together before we head into a good conference.”

Said pitcher-first baseman Torey Dumont, “We’re really excited for this weekend. We’ve been looking forward to it all through the fall and then coming back here after Christmas break. We’re finally getting to play other teams. It’ll be a real telling of us and we’ll see who goes where and where the pieces fit together.”

UHV softball starts play in Galveston Friday. Three games for the Jaguars on day one, first at 11:00 in the morning against San Jacinto College.

UHV baseball, getting set for its pre-season scrimmages here this weekend..

15 varsity players return to the Jaguars, and they have a roster of 25 players. Most of the returnees are everyday players. One of the notable new Jaguars, right fielder Luis Vargas, a key player on last summer’s TCL champion Victoria Generals. I talked with Luis and returning starter Joshua Fonseca about how workouts are going so far.

Said Fonseca, “It feels good to be back out with the guys, getting reps in, getting prepped for the season, with fine tuning to go on. We’re really looking forward to the spring.”
Said Vargas, “I feel pretty good. After playing for the Generals I had a really good experience. I love this town and I feel really excited to do good for the university and for the town, too.”

UHV baseball starts with a scrimmage doubleheader at Riverside Sunday starting at 1:00 against Houston Community College.
