UHV Baseball Players Earn Conference Honors

University of Houston-Victoria pitcher Steven Ellis and designated hitter Andrew Gross were recognized Monday for their play in a four-game sweep over Texas College in the Red River Athletic Conference.

Ellis was named the RRAC Pitcher of the Week, while Gross was named the RRAC Co-Player of the Week for the week of March 21-27.

Ellis pitched the second no-hitter in school history and the first at UHV since 2008. The senior form Houston didn’t allow a hit or a walk in seven innings of work with five strikeouts on Friday. Only an error prevented Ellis from tossing a perfect game as the Jaguars defeated TXC, 12-0. Ellis (2-1) is fifth in the conference in ERA this season at 2.51, and he is eighth in strikeouts with 36.

Gross crushed two home runs and drove in 11 runs in the Jaguars’ four-game sweep of Texas College. On Friday, the junior designated hitter was 3-for-9 in a doubleheader with a homer and three RBIs. Gross followed up with five hits on Saturday including a six-RBI game to close out the series with an 11-0 win.

The Alvin, Texas, native was 8-for-18 with six runs scored, three doubles and a .944 slugging percentage. Gross leads the RRAC with 11 homers and 34 RBIs this season. UHV climbed to 7-5 in conference play and 8-19 overall.

Gross shared Player of the Week honors with Jarvis Christian’s Javion Randle.
