UHV baseball opens series with split

The UHVJaguars and the Jarvis Christian Bulldogs came away with a one-run victories Sunday in splitting a Red River Athletic Conference doubleheader at Riverside Stadium.

The Jaguars overcame the Bulldogs’ seventh-inning rally in the opening game to grab a 3-2 victory in 10 innings. Unfortunately for the Jaguars, the Bulldogs’ early rally in Game 2 stood up for a 6-5 victory.

The two teams wrap up the three-game conference series on Monday with an 11 a.m. single game at Riverside.

Behind two RBIs from Dalton Rodriguez (SR/Bay City, TX) the Jaguars (4-8, 2-3 RRAC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening game with a pair of solo runs in the fourth and sixth.

Collin Quinn (FR/El Campo, TX) came within an out of a complete game shutout but the Bulldogs (11-14, 2-3 RRAC) managed to load the base ending Quinn’s night. Nathaniel Pena (FR/Angleton, TX) came on a gave up a two-run single that tied the game.

Pena then shut the Bulldogs down as he spread four hits and a walk over 3.1 innings to capture his first collegiate victory. Quinn worked 6.2 innings allowing two runs on seven hits and three walks, while striking out four.

Jacob Mihalski (JR/League City, TX) provided the game-winner for the Jaguars in the 10th with a bases-loaded walk-off single to left top score Joshus Fonseca.

Fonseca opened the inning being hit by a pitch with one out. Allen Westmoreland (SR/Pearland, TX) then doubled to left-center and Andrew Gross (SR/Alvin, TX) drew an intentional walk to load the bases. The Bulldogs then went to a five-player infield and Mihalski slapped his single through the hole between short and second.

The Bulldogs jumped out with a solo run in the first and two more in the second to take an early 3-0 lead.

The Jaguars struck back in the bottom of the second to grab their lone lead.

Dalton Rodriguez started the five-run inning with an infield single. Chase Almendarez (JR/Round Rock, TX) was hit by a pitch and Derek Maciejeski (FR/Tomball, TX) loaded the bases with another infield single.

Westmoreland was hit by a pitch to force Rodriguez home. Joshua Fonseca (SO/Pasadena, TX) then singled through the hole at short to plate pinch-runner Gunner Harrison (FR/Victoria, TX) and Garrett Gray-Mathis (FR/Smithville, TX) followed with a two-run single down the left field line to plate two more runs for a 4-3 lead. Chase Tamez (SO/Cypress, TX) finished off the scoring with an RBI single.

The lead would be short leaved as the Bulldogs responded back with a three-run third for a 6-5 advantage.

Neither team would score the rest of the way.
