UHV Baseball Ends Losing Streak
Jaguars Get First Conference Win
MARSHALL – The University of Houston-Victoria baseball team snapped its eight-game losing streak in a big way Friday afternoon erupting for 18 hits and 17 runs in a win over Wiley College.
Luis Vargas (SR/Barquisimeto, Lara, Venezuela) drove in six runs and Anthony Flores (FR/Houston, TX) added three RBI as the Jaguars rolled to a 17-1 victory over the Wildcats in a Red River Athletic Conference contest at Coker Field.
All nine UHV starters scored at least one run in the contest as the Jaguars took the lead for good with a four-run second inning. The Jaguars would tack on four more in the fourth, add three in the seventh and put the game away with six more in the eighth.
UHV starter Bailey Kolb (SO/Inez, TX) gave up both runs as he worked six innings allowing six hits and one walk, while striking out four for the win. Tyler Gryseels pitched two shutout innings of relief allowing just one hit and striking out one.
Vargas, who was 3-for-6 in the game, highlighted the eighth inning with a three-run home run, while Zachariah Vela added a two-run shot in the seventh for his lone hit of the game.
Caleb Zoda (SR/Frisco, TX) belted out two doubles in a 4-for-4 performance that included three runs and an RBI, while John Nelson (FR/Austin, TX) also had two doubles while going 3-for-5 with two runs. Maxwell Sheldon (SR/Houston, TX) added a double for the Jaguars as he went 2-for-5 with two RBI.
The Jaguars and Wildcats wrap up the series on Saturday with a noon doubleheader.
