UHV baseball coach inducted into Astros’ Hall of Fame

The Astros only select two people into its Hall of Fame per year

HOUSTON, Texas —  Terry Puhl is a former all-star outfielder for the Astros and it was announced January 27, 2022 that Puhl along with Tal Smith have been elected to the Astros Hall of Fame. Puhl played for the ‘Stros for 14 seasons and he ranks in the top 10 in franchise history in hits (1,357), doubles (226), triples (56), runs scored (676) and stolen bases (217). The former all-star had a .280 batting average to go with it. The UHV coach has known about this announcement for a few weeks now and is happy the secret is out.

I was very emotional, I must admit. I’m not a very emotional person, but that one kind of got me because that was the one I wanted, said Puhl. I wanted to be in the Astros Hall of Fame. I knew I had pretty close credentials so I’m very happy.

The Astros only select two people into its Hall of Fame per year. Now there are only 24 members in the hall. Puhl is also in the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and the Texas Baseball Hall of Fame. Puhl’s favorite memory as an individual player, is when he helped preserve Nolan Ryan’s fifth no hitter against Mike Scoscia by making a catch in right center field.

Having Nolan [Ryan] come in after the game, walk up to my locker and say “Hey, TP…” I looked around because there were lots of cameras around and he walked over to my locker and Nolan said “…nice catch!” That’s one of my great memories.

A message Puhl has to his ball players at UHV, is to have fun out there and create friendships that could last forever like he did. The Jaguars will have their first game January 28, against Wayland Baptist University at 2:00 p.m. at Riverside Stadium.

Puhl and Smith will officially enter the team’s hall of fame with a ceremony before an Astros game against the Oakland Athletics at Minute Maid Park on August 13, 2022.
