TxDOT urges drivers to stay off roads

Safety is TxDOT’s TOP PRIORITY as we prepare for an unprecedented winter weather event

VICTORIA, Texas- As the Crossroads deals with possible record breaking cold, the Texas Department of Transportation is urging drivers to stay home and only travel if necessary to avoid hazardous road conditions.

While TxDOT and its crews do their best to keep the roadways safe, it’s up to drivers to do their part and take precautions when driving in hazardous winter conditions. TxDOT encourages drivers to plan ahead by checking weather forecasts and visiting DriveTexas.org for current road conditions and closures. Winter weather creates unpredictable and dangerous driving conditions. If travel is necessary, drivers are encouraged to use extreme caution and follow the winter travel safety tips below:

• If you must drive, reduce your speed and increase your following distance

• If you must drive, anticipate delays. Plan ahead and allow plenty of time to reach your destination.

• Remember that everyone on the road is dealing with the same conditions. Be courteous to other drivers so everyone can safely reach their destinations.

• Carry an emergency kit (food, water, blankets, etc.) in your vehicle.

• It is important to remember that conditions on roadways can change rapidly and even with proactive measures the fast-changing severe Texas weather can still result in some ice accumulating.

Other tips to also remember:

• Drive with your headlights on to see and be seen by others.

• Do not use cruise control.

• Slow and Steady. Do not speed.

• Everyone in the vehicle should be wearing a seatbelt. Every rider. Every time.
