Two West Warriors Go For Swimming & Diving District Titles

Cervantes, Luke Aim For Gold

A West student-athlete, heading into uncharted waters Friday.

Tanner Luke will be swimming in three events at district, but this time he will be competing at the district meet in another event for the first time. The junior will go for district diving gold. He won the VISD Swimming And Diving Invitational earlier this month. I asked Luke how much confidence that win gives to him going into district.

“There’ll probably be five of us. I don’t know about winning. I haven’t seen the other divers. But hopefully I can secure a third or second place hopefully.”

Cristina Cervantes is entering her last district swim meet. The West senior has won ten district titles in her first three district meets, and the Warrior girls have won the district title every one of Cristina’s seasons on the team. This time Cervantes goes into district after missing November and December competitions due to a strained shoulder. Cristina told me how confident she is of having a strong district meet.

“I’m pretty confident. We’ve been training really hard. We’ve been going to the weight room a lot more this year. We’ll get it this year ”

The district swimming and diving meet starts Friday morning at 10:30 with the diving at the VISD Aquatic Center. The swimming starts at 12:30.
