Two VISD Athletes Sign With NCAA Division I Colleges

Two VISD athletes, signing within half an hour of each other with NCAA Division I colleges Thursday.
West senior Ryleigh Redding, signing with Texas Tech, where she will specialize in pole vault. That’s the event that Ryleigh won silver medals in last year and this year. Redding is the first VISD athlete ever to win two medals in one state track meet Last Friday at UT-Austin. she first won silver in pole vault, then got the bronze in the 300 meter hurdles. Ryleigh picked up 15 points for the Warriors at the state meet. I talked with Ryleigh and Warrior girls track head coach Bryan MacDonald. Said Redding, “I’ve worked all four years of my high school track career for something like this. It’s just an exciting day for me.” Said coach MacDonald, “It’s a really big day. She’s worked really hard all season for it and so we’re excited. We knew this day would come with all the hard work she’s put in over the years.”
I was also at East, where district golf MVP Zayda Cedillo signs with Stephen F. Austin State. Zayda won individual medalist honors at the district tournament at The Club At Colony Creek last month, then she took second place at regionals in San Antonio, qualifying her for her second straight trip to state. Last fall, she shot the lowest round in East girls golf history, a 69 in the VISD Invitational at The Club At Colony Creek. I talked with Zayda and head coach Mike Smith. Said Cedillo, “I’m very excited. I’ve been dreaming of this my whole high school season. Just to see that it’s coming true is an absolute blessing.” Said coach Smith, “This is really big. Zayda has done a lot of work and she is the real deal. She’s gonna make some noise.”
Zayda Cedillo plays in the state 5A golf championships for the second straight year starting Monday in Georgetown.
