Tips to Keep You and Your Family Safe This Holiday Season

Decorating your Christmas tree with lights with family is fun and can be a tradition for many. However, Christmas lights are one of the most dangerous things during the holiday time. There are things you need to be mindful of.

DeWitt County authorities say there have been at least two structure fires this December. Fire officials now want to make sure that you are taking precautions when decorating your home.

According to Dewitt County Office of Emergency Management, some potential deadly holiday hazards are fires related to unattended candles, and dry live Christmas trees. Both indoor and outdoor lights should be checked, and be sure to keep small ornaments out of reach from children and pets.

“Make sure that if you have a live Christmas tree, that you keep it watered. If you do not keep it watered it could go up in flames very easily,” explains Emergency Management Coordinator Cyndi Smith.

“Do not keep Christmas tree lights on at night. That’s another way that you could be killed in the middle of the night because a Christmas tree could catch on fire.”
