The Military Hero of the Month inspires the next generation at Industrial High School
Robert Elkins reflects on 20 years of service in the Navy
VICTORIA, Texas—Robert Elkins is a teacher and coach at Industrial High School. He joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 18 and he’s visited more than 25 countries around the world.
“Well I did 20 years, I was stationed on six different ships. I did a tour of a drill instructor at basic training, I did that for four years. I taught seaman shipment at a training school in the navy for a couple of years,” said Robert Elkins, Military Hero of the Month.
Elkins says he was also a recruiter for a few years while in the Navy. Now at Industrial High School, he’s using some of what he’s learned to help the youth form and shape their lives.
“Every year since he’s been at Industrial my husband has had student-athletes and some years a team of athletes make it to the state competition level and many of his athletes have gone on to sign up for and gone into the military,” said Kari Elkins, Robert’s wife.
Elkins retired as a Navy Chief in 2001 then graduated from Texas State in 2007. He took a moment to reflect on some of the things he has missed since he retired from the navy.
“Well I enjoyed my 20 years, you don’t spend that long in the military without enjoying it. I miss the camaraderie with the guys and the travel. All those things are fun memories,” said Elkins.
We want to thank you Mr. Elkins for serving our country and being our Military Hero of the Month.
