Texans Open Joint Practice Sessions With 49ers

The Houston Texans held their first day of joint practices with the 49ers Wednesday, with Deshaun Watson, JJ Watt, and Jadaveon Clowney all looking strong as they work their way back from last year’s season-ending injuries. With the team back from Training Camp at the Greenbrier in West Virginia, Newscenter25 Sports traveled to the Texans’ Houston Methodist Training Center, where things got heated quickly.

With hundreds of fans in attendance to catch a glimpse of their 2018 team, tempers flared quickly when a fight broke out on the first play of a joint training scrimmage. The brawl, which formed around 49ers DB Jimmie Ward and Texans Pro-Bowl WR Deandre Hopkins, began when Hopkins didn’t take kindly to having his helmet knocked off in the course of a hard tackle.

“Just competition. That’s all I’m really going to speak on that,” said Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, who remained tight lipped about the altercation.

Head coach Bill O’Brien took a similar approach at his press conference.

“Yeah, it’s ridiculous. We just got to move on,” O’Brien said. “Ridiculous. No, no, nope. Just gotta move on, just gotta move on.”

The Texans will continue joint practice with San Francisco on Thursday, before the two square off in their second preseason game this weekend. As a result of his involvement, Hopkins was sent back to the locker room for the remainder of practice.
