Teachers of the Year for Victoria I.S.D. have been announced

Ronda Hancock and Cody McDonald have been selected

VICTORIA, Texas – Respectively, V.I.S.D.  Elementary and Secondary Teachers of the Year have been selected and are: Ronda Hancock and Cody McDonald.

Hancock, second-grade teacher at Torres Elementary School, is in her eighth year of teaching Torres Tigers. She has transformed her hands-on, interactive lessons into a creative, virtual environment for her students. Throughout the year, her online students have created weather forecast videos, complimented a “How To” writing project with videos on how to make a sandwich, scavenger hunts for 3D shapes, built a ramp using tools around their house and watched chicks hatch on a live feed from the classroom. Hancock looks forward to working with her kids to dissect a lima bean, plant seeds and watch them grow before the end of the school year. Her goal is to provide the same second grade experience for her online students as her face-to-face learning.

Along with classroom education, Ms. Hancock is teaching her students compassion and generosity. She has helped connect families with resources to meet their basic needs during difficult situations, such as Hurricane Harvey, Covid-19, and this year’s ice storm.

McDonald, three-year teacher and coach at Victoria West High School, aims to create an environment that fosters curiosity and excitement for learning, rather than a fear of making mistakes. His AP Computer Science students enthusiastically learn serial logic, variables, conditionals and iteration by programming handheld drones.

Coach McDonald doesn’t only focus on the high school years of shaping his students. He maintains openness and honesty with his students about his own struggles with finding his purpose after high school. McDonald feels as a teacher he is given the opportunity to guide and mentor students as they begin their decision-making journey that will impact their career, community leadership and overall future.

The regional selection process for the Region 3 Teacher of the Year is conducted in June and July. Ms. Hancock and Coach McDonald are both candidates in their respective grade levels.
