TEA announces new grant opportunity for the 2021-2022 Texas Reading Initiative-A Birth to Kinder grant program

TEXAS – Today, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) announced the availability of grant funds for the 2021-2022 Texas Reading Initiative – Birth to Kinder grant program. The time period of the grant is from Sept. 3, 2021 to Sept. 30, 2022 and is expected to have up to five years of continuation funding subject to future appropriations by the U.S. Congress Funding.

The main goal of this grant is to enhance kindergarten readiness by providing high-quality texts, streamlined resources and comprehensive support to Texas young learners and their families. Increasing exposure to high-quality books, supplemental learning resources and evidence-based family education programs will foster home reading and introduce children to exclusive, interactive learning experiences. By aligning these three strategies, it will lead and encourage families to support their children’s development of important language and literacy skills.

The request for Application (RFA_ #701-21-121 is authorized by the LII U.S. Code Title 20 Chapter 70 Subchapter II Part B Subpart 2 6642 is available on the TEA Grant Opportunities page. All sub-grantee applications will need to include a needs assessment that demonstrates how they will directly impact families that feed into districts with low literacy and/or kindergarten readiness scores. The needs assessment should consist of how the sub-grantees will utilize CSLD funds to streamline and align services, while focusing on disadvantaged families and children in need of literacy interventions or other support services.

Those eligible to apply for this grant opportunity include ESCs and/or non-profit organizations. Non-profit organizations are required to provide proof of their 501(c)(3) tax exempt status and federal tax ID number at the time of application.

TEA plans to select around 1-2 grantees to to award a grant and implement a statewide program. Approximately $630,000 is available annually for this grant program, and grants are expected to range from $315,000 to $630,000 each year. To be considered, applicants must score a minimum of 75% of the total points on the application.

The deadline for applications to be received by the Texas Education Agency is June 8, 2021 by 11:59 p.m. CT, to be considered for funding.
