Taxi company takes precautions to protect customers, employees from COVID-19

VICTORIA, Texas – Cesar Hernandez opened his cab company, Cesar’s, in 2001 after several years of working as a taxi driver in San Antonio and 20 years serving in the military.

“Back in 1991, the employment conditions were pretty bad, real slow, not much so I had to commute to San Antonio, working jobs over there to pay the bills here,” Hernandez said.

Hernandez takes great pride in his work and is proud to be an immigrant living the American Dream and one that shares a birthday with our nation.

“I was born in Monterrey, Nuevo León México, my parents came over and I stayed by myself with my aunt until they established themselves here and then they brought me over and I became a US citizen when I joined the Army,” Hernandez said.

The 66-year-old said his company’s drivers take frequent precautions to combat the spread of COVID-19.

“In the morning when the drivers come in, I give them a bottle of disinfectant and a cloth towel, so that after customers who appear to be sick, they disinfect that area completely before they move on to somebody else and they wipe it down for the benefit of other customers and for the safety of my drivers, we wear the masks all the time,” Hernandez said. “When the pandemic hit us, they closed down the bars, restaurants had no dine-in and so. that part of the business went away quickly overnight and I had to let go of my night drivers because there was not enough there for everybody, and I focus now mostly on the day shift until the pandemic goes away and I can open up at night again.”
