Tax Free weekend has additional items that are now included due to COVID-19

Certain essential workers get special discounts

VICTORIA, Texas- Tax-Free weekend is here again and it runs until this Sunday at midnight. This gives families the opportunity to save money on those items that perhaps they’ve been eyeing and can now get without paying tax.

For the past few years, tax-free weekend only included items like shoes, clothes, and backpacks. This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, face masks, disposable fabric, and cloths are also included as tax-free items.

One local store shared with us what they’re doing to help families save during tax-free weekend. The Victoria Academy store is working on ways to help families during this difficult time.

“I think we’re definitely looking to save people as much money as possible. Even more than last year, we always try to but they are really amping it up and were just really trying to again focus on the necessities,” said Allyssa Rosales, the Operations Manager at Academy.

Academy is also offering special discounts for certain essential workers.

“We’re also doing 25% off Under Armor clothes and shoes, so just adding a little extra bang to your buck. We’re also doing 10% off for healthcare professionals, first responders, and military personnel,” said Rosales.

With the uncertainties of how this school year will proceed Academy Sports & Outdoors are still expecting a successful weekend.

“We’re still getting ready, I think as a parent you always want to be prepared, whichever way it goes. So I think we’re seeing a lot of that, just preparedness. A lot of the stuff that is tax-free or that we do have is special is a necessity anyway,” said Rosales.

Texas sales tax holiday has been an annual event since 1999.
