SWAT member forced to shoot suspect in standoff in Lavaca County
Deceased suspect identified as Francisco Junior Lopez, 36, of Cuero
LAVACA County – On Sunday Jan. 23, 2022, around 3 p.m., the Yoakum Police Department tried to pull over a driver who was later identified as Francisco Junior Lopez, 36, of Cuero, Texas. Authorities said Lopez refused to stop and drove off until his vehicle was disabled by tire deflation devices deployed by the Hallettsville Police Department.
That’s when Lopez took off running. He went to a home and held an elderly woman hostage, authorities said.
At the request of the Lavaca County Sheriff’s Office, the Texas Department of Public Safety Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT) and the DPS Crisis Negotiation Team helped in the situation. Authorities said Lopez placed the hostage at serious risk of death during the incident, and a SWAT member shot him.
Lavaca County Justice of the Peace Judge Travis Hill pronounced Lopez dead at the scene.
The Texas Rangers are investigating the incident and will submit their findings to the Lavaca County District Attorney’s Office.
