Summer Kids Play Week-Golf 7-12
Top Area Youngsters Play STPGA Tourney
Victoria, Texas —
Our Summer Kids Play Week series continues tonight with golf.
Some area golfers, looking to improve for the fall by playing hard in the summer.
The Southern Texas PGA Junior Tour, once again drawing the top youth golfers in south Texas for strong competition. Several local golfers have been using this tour to improve their games for their high school teams. Jared Lofland has played Southern Texas PGA Junior Folf for four years. Lofland has two big reasons for coming back to play in this summer tour.
Said the Warriors junior, “I like playing in it because a lot of my friends play. It’s just a friendly competition. We all know each other and we’re friends. It helps me get reps in for tournaments that really matter during the school year.”
St. Joe junior Jacob Pena has been playing on this tour for three years, and he finished third at the STPGA tour event in June at Victoria Country Club. Pena sees lots of improvement in his game by playing in these events.
“It’s always good to try new courses that you haven’t played before or seen. I’d say it’s really good practice.”
East girls golfer Amber Short is playing four Southern Texas PGA junior tournaments per month this summer.
“It helps me because it really gets my mental game together before I start the school season. Mental game is such an important part of golf.”
How do these tournaments improve these golfers more so than just a regular 18-hole round?
Said Lofland, “Mainly just consistency, getting lower scores and getting everything dialed in.”
Said Pena, “That’s that focus that you need in order to shoot a lower score. I really enjoy that. “
