STJ Volleyball Star Signs With College
Wharton Signs With Arkansas-Fort Smith
Due to the pandemic, high school sports stars could not sign with colleges at their high schools, since the schools were closed.
So, Savannah Wharton, four-time All-State volleyball player at St. Joe, picked KAVU as the place for her to sign with the University Of Arkansas At Fort Smith, an NCAA Division II college. She was joined by her mother and grandmother. The 6-4 outside hitter, three-time first team All-State pick, made the 2018 TAPPS All-State tournament team when the Lady Flyers won their first state volleyball title. Savannah was also first team All-District all four years she played at St. Joe. I talked with Savannah and her proud mom.
Said Savannah, “It’s a really special day. I have the two most important people in my life here with me today. Originally I was going to sign on my grandfather’s birthday, but that didn’t come to pass because of COVID-19. Today’s a good day.”
Said Samantha Wharton, “It’s very exciting and I’m very proud of her accomplishments. This is something she was determined to do ever since the Y, when she fell in love with volleyball. I’m just happy that she followed her dream and she gets to play at the next level.”
Savannah, a two-time Newscenter 25 Athlete Of The Week, helped lead St. Joe volleyball to four straight district championships.
