STJ, Calhoun Football Prep For Next Scrimmages

St. Joe and Calhoun football, getting ready for pre-season scrimmages this week.
The Flyers, in their second week of workouts in pads, have 24 varsity players back from last year, plus six transfers from East. They are learning new offensive and defensive schemes. New head coach Bryan Jones told me the offense will run the spread a bit more than last year, utilizing the tight end more. Also, starting quarterback Jacob Bordovsky returns, but coach Jones told me he may be used at other positions as well. I asked coach Jones what stood out about their first scrimmages against Palacios and Flatonia. “Defense. We answered the bell on defense really well. We responded with physical play and we stepped it up a notch across the board. I was very pleased with that.”
St. Joe football’s final scrimmage comes Thursday night in Corpus Christi against John Paul.
Calhoun football, getting ready to start its first season in 5A Division II.
It’s a move Sandcrab football head coach Richard Whitaker told us he was real happy about on UIL Realignment And Reclassification Day last February. Calhoun now will not have to face a major deficiency in enrollment numbers in its new football district. The Sandcrabs have nine starters back on defense, five back on offense, including running back Daniel martinez. Their new starting quarterback is junior Conner Kestler. Our Sean Coffey talked with coach Whitaker about his team’s enthusiasm level. “Well these kids, they’re excited about their opportunity this year. We feel like we fell a little short last year of our goal. So they’ve worked hard in the offseason to try and make up for last year, and they’re excited for the opportunity they have in front of them. Hopefully they’ll make the best of it.”
Calhoun football’s only scrimmage comes Friday night at Spring Woods.
