STJ basketball splits district doubleheader
VICTORIA, Texas — It was an up and down day for Flyer basketball.
St. Joe split their Saturday district doubleheader at home, as the Lady Flyers fell to Brownsville St. Joseph before the boys team beat the Bloodhounds to earn their 25th win of the season.
The Lady Flyers got play started at the STJ Dome against an aggressive Lady Bloodhounds team, having trouble breaking through the Brownsville press all afternoon. Despite trailing by just three at the half, St. Joe failed to find a rhythm in half number two as the Lady Bloodhounds pulled away to the tune of a 61-46 victory.
“We’re young and a little inexperienced,” Lady Flyers head coach Edward Ousley said after the game. “But once we get a little more experience under our belt, I think we’ll be hard to deal with.”
The Flyer boys followed with their own contest against Brownsville SJ, dictating terms for much of the afternoon as they sailed to a 79-53 win against the Bloodhounds. The victory improves the Flyers’ record to an eye-popping 25-1 on the season, as dreams of a potential run at state grow in the minds of many.
St. Joe basketball will host Incarnate Word in the STJ Dome on Tuesday for another district doubleheader.
