STJ athletics director, head basketball coach both stepping down
Victoria, TEXAS — A major athletics overhaul is underway at St. Joe.
On Friday morning, STJ athletics director and head football coach Bryan Jones announced he will resign and accept a position as quarterbacks coach and head track coach at El Campo High School. According to Jones, the decision will become official sometime in mid-June.
STJ head basketball coach Michael Blank — also the defensive coordinator for the Flyer Football team — will be leaving the school as well to accept a position in Cuero. Blank will become the head coach for Cuero boys basketball and work as defensive coordinator under new Gobbler football coach Jack Alvarez.
“We’re sad to see some of our coaches go,” said STJ President John Gilley, discussing the news. “When you have some of that success, you’re gonna be sought after with certain programs.”
Under Jones, who became athletics director before the 2018-19 school year, STJ football enjoyed back-to-back winning seasons and playoff appearances for the first time since 2009, including an area championship in 2019. Flyer football won 14 games in Jones’ two seasons at the helm after managing just 19 wins between 2009 and 2018.
STJ boys basketball has also seen a renaissance in recent years, going 30-2 under Blank in 2018-19 before posting a 25-5 record and reaching the regional finals this past winter.
Still, Gilley remains optimistic that the school’s recent athletic accomplishments will continue into the future.
“We have a lot of great student athletes coming back, in volleyball, in football, in basketball and we’re excited about that,” said Gilley. “A lot will be put on their shoulders but we know they can handle it.”
This is a developing story and we will update it as more information becomes available.
