UHV soccer sweeps McPherson

DALLAS, Texas - The University of Houston men's soccer team scored a pair of goals in each half Monday to defeat the McPherson Bulldogs at Richland College.

The Jaguars improve to 2-0 on the season, while McPherson falls to 1-1. The Jaguars will return to action Friday when they host the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma in a 3:30 p.m. match at The Cage.

The Jaguars dominated the first half with a 9-2 edge in shots with Adrian Rodriguez (JR/McAllen, TX) putting the Jaguars up 1-0 with a goal in the 20th minute.

Oliver Nugent (JR/Liverpool, England) made it 2-0 when Mohammed Ibrahim (SR/Ridgeland, MS) hit Brody Patience SR/Douglas, Isle of Man) with a pass, who then fired to Nugent who blasted the back of the net with a shot in the 31st minute.

Jose Martinez (FR/Houston, TX) quickly made it 3-0 Jaguars when he scored two minutes into the second half.

Brody Patience then hit Connagh Wilks (JR/Egham, England) for a header off a corner kick in the 60th minute to put the Jaguars up 4-0.

McPherson avoid the shutout with a Guido Battisini goal in the 74th minute.

Wilks paced the Jaguars with three shots, while Nugent and Patience each added two as the Jaguars outshot the Bulldogs 14-4. Gian Marco Cordoba (JR/Houston, TX) was in goal for the win and finished with three saves.

 On the women's side, Kiki Hinojosa (SO/La Porte, TX) scored a late first-half goal Monday to lead the University of Houston-Victoria women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over the McPherson Lady Bulldogs at Richland College.

The Jaguars improve to 1-1 on the season, while McPherson falls to 0-2. The Jaguars return to action Friday when they host the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma in a 1 p.m. match at The Cage.

Hinojosa took a pass from Victoria Smith (SO/Round Rock, TX) and fired a shot past the McPherson goalkeeper from about 25 yards out for the game's lone goal in the 41st minute.

UHV held a 16-4 edge in shots against McPherson, including a 5-2 edge in shots on goal. Ariana Balderas (FR/San Antonio, TX) paced the Jaguars with five shots, while Daisy Contreras (JR/Stockton, CA) had three and Elizabeth Reyes (SO/Edinburg, TX) two. Amanda Bautista (SR/Houston, TX) was in goal for the shutout and finished with two saves.
