Port Lavaca, Texas -
Not all the lights at Gregory-Portland's stadium went out on Calhoun football last Friday night.
Just half of them.
Shortly after a transformer at the stadium blew around 9:15, with the Sandcrabs ahead in the third quarter, work was started to fix the transformer. With the transformer fixed about two hours later, the game resumed. and the Sandcrabs got a big win. I talked with the Sandcrabs about the bizarre game that ended early Saturday morning.
Said head coach Richard Whitaker, "If something like that happens early in the game then leaving and coming back the next day is an option. But when you've played three quarters of football that's not an option. You have to finish it that night. We had plans of moving to Buc Stadium. We were fixing to pack up and go there. "
Said LB/TE Cade Kveton, "It was challenging to stay focused. The whole team stayed focused and kept our heads in the game.We were able to do it and come out with a win."
Calhoun football now has one of the top matchups in the state Friday night. The Sandcrabs continue district play by hosting unbeaten Alice.
