Port Lavaca, Texas -
When word got out Monday that Calhoun football had to forfeit its win over Alice last Friday night, one big question came up?.
Would Steve Johnson's record-setting stats from that game get erased? The answer, no. According to Calhoun football head coach Richard Whitaker, Johnson rushed for a Sandcrab record 358 yards, while scoring four touchdowns. Also in that game, Johnson, a junior, became Calhoun's all-time leading rusher. I asked Steve and coach Whitaker how relieved they were that that record-setting performance will stand.
Said Johnson, "I was happy at that time. I knew that going into that game what I needed to do. But knowing I kept my stats gave us a little uplift, knowing that I don't have to repeat all that stuff. >
Said coach Whitaker, "I know that was one of the things that everyone was worried about. Even the parents when I talked to them. I told them that the UIL told me that the stats from the game stay in place. It was a tremendous game for Steve. It would have been a heartbreaker if that would happen as well. "
Calhoun football's next huge district game comes Friday night at Tuloso-Midway.
