Our Athlete Of The Week Is Skyleigh Sears
Winners of thirteen consecutive state titles before a third place finish in Waco this year, Calhoun girls powerlifting isn't lacking for prestige. One of the program's recent stars, Skyleigh Sears, has made it a point to live up to those lofty expectations, earning her third straight individual state title last weekend. The senior tells me despite the broken streak, she wants to leave a positive legacy.
"It's been a great ride. Like, especially with this new team. I hope they realize that they're actually very strong. Because my freshman year I didn't even qualify for state."
Sears has certainly made up for it since, bringing the Sandcrabs' first powerlifting three-peat and a bevy of other awards in the process. Just don't tell her that.
"It feels great, but I still wanted to do -- I still wanted better. Like I know I could do better, I wanted to break records. But sometimes things don't go your way, and you've just got to live with it."
Sears' coach, Jason Bagwell, doesn't want to hear any of it. He tells me the senior's one of the most special athletes he's ever worked with.
"We've had other lifters win state during that time period also, but no one has done it three times in a row. She's irreplaceable."
Bagwell believes it's an X factor that's made her such a force for the Sandies.
"Her will to win. Winning to her means more than anything. It's that serious with her, and people like that are hard to stop."
As for the next step? Sears says she's already been approached by college recruiters and wants to compete against the best. As evidenced by her hardware, there's plenty on her resume to lift her. Sean Coffey, Newscenter 25 Sports.
