South Texas Blood and Tissue Center is in desperate need of blood
VICTORIA, Texas-South Texas Blood and Tissue Center is urging the community to continue to give blood during the COVID-19 pandemic. The center is taking extra precautions to make sure everyone is safe.
“When we meet them at the door, we’re going to take their temperature. We’re going to ask them to hand sanitize right then and there. Then we are going to ask them a series of questions. I have those questions. So one of the things we are going to ask them is do you have a persistent cough, shortness of breath, flu-like symptoms not related to allergies, sore throat, fever in the last 24 hours? Those are going to be the questions we ask immediately. If we have a ‘yes’ to any of those questions we’re going to thank them for coming and ask them to come back when they are symptom-free,” said Ron Chavez, Victoria Facility Director, at South Texas Blood & Tissue Center.
South Texas Blood and Tissue Center, has implemented these safety measures to keep the community protected. Currently, the blood center will only have one operating location during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“As of right now, all blood drives in the community are suspended. We’re not going to be taking our mobile units to anywhere right now. What we’re going to do is have a centralized place which right now it’s here at 1109 Sam Houston. Were hoping to have community drives and we’re working to set those up,” said Chavez
Chavez says everyone should be concerned about COVID-19, but now is also the time to help your neighbor.
The minute we stop thinking about each other is the minute we have a lot of problems and a lot of issues. Right now those individuals that are waiting for our products at the hospital they are needing it, both for trauma patients, cancer treatments and things like that. Their waiting for those donors to come in every single day,” said Chavez.
