SNAP benefits extension for September 2021

AUSTIN, Texas – On Friday, Sept. 3, Governor Greg Abbott announced that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) is providing nearly $286 million in emergency Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) food benefits. This amount will be provided for the month of September, as the state continues its response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Millions of Texans have looked to Emergency SNAP benefits to keep food at home throughout the pandemic, and I am happy to work alongside HHSC to continue providing this critical resource to those who need it,” said Governor Abbott. “Thank you to HHSC and USDA for continuing to work together to secure these benefits for Texas families.”

“As we continue to navigate through the pandemic, we are pleased to provide this additional support to ensure Texans will be able to keep food on their table for themselves and their families,” said Texas HHS Access and Eligibility Services Deputy Executive Commissioner Wayne Salter.

SNAP benefits extension: USDA approves extension of SNAP benefits

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) gave HHSC federal approval to extend the maximum, allowable amount of SNAP benefits. The benefit amount for each recipient is based on family size. All SNAP households will receive a minimum of $95 in emergency allotments.

Previously, over $3.2 billion in benefits were provided to Texans since April 2020. The emergency September allotments are in addition to those funds already received.

Recipients will also continue to receive a 15 percent increase in their total benefits. This will continue each month until Sept. 2021. Households should receive the 15 percent increase and the additional emergency allotment amount by Sept. 30.

SNAP is a federal program administered by HHSC. It provides food assistance to approximately 1.4 million eligible, low-income families and individuals in the State of Texas.
