Single-car crash near Yoakum leaves one dead, four in hospital

One is dead and four more injured after a single-vehicle accident just after midnight near Yoakum.

The driver of a 2017 Buick Regal, 20-year-old Amber Marie Bennetsen, was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Hallie Hall at 3:02 Tuesday morning on FM 318 at the intersection of Country Road 395.

Bennetsen was driving north on FM 318 with four other passengers when, for reasons still under investigation, the car left the road and then over-corrected back into the southbound lanes hitting a concrete culvert at County Road 395 and sending the car air-born.

The rear-end of the car hit a tree and finally came to rest in the grass on the northbound side.

21-year-old Isaac Garza, of Cuero; 19-year-old Tyron Brooks, of Yoakum; and 19-year-old Mariah Torres were all flown to San Antonio Medical Center in serious condition.

22-year-old Tyrin Smith, of Yoakum, was taken to Yoakum Community Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

All five occupants were not wearing seat belts according to Texas DPS Media Spokesperson Sgt. Ruben San Miguel.
