Several VISD Art Students Competing in State Competition
VICTORIA- Plenty of long days and hard-working nights sure did pay off for several Victoria Independent School District art students.
“I worked days and nights,” said Paisley Humpert, Victoria East High School sophomore. “Then I found out I was going to State and I was so excited.”
Similar relief and excitement can be seen across town in Victoria West High School freshman Sara Udd.
” I think getting this far is really exciting,” said Udd, who is competing at the State level for the very first time.
This weekend, the two art students will joins six of their classmates to showcase their works of art at the State Visual Arts Scholastic Event or VASE. The competition will take place in San Antonio at James Madison High School.
“I didn’t know I was going to pull it off,” said West sophomore Ariana Valle, who drew an image of her long-time best friend, a 7-year-old Pomeranian Chihuahua.
According to Victoria West art teacher Shelly Spears, eight art students from both high schools surpassed regional and area judging back in February. On Saturday, all eight will return to compete against thousands of other students from across the state.
“To know that I’m representing my school with something that I love to do is pretty amazing,” said Savanna Wiley, West senior.
