Scaffold worker falls to his death in Ingleside
Authorities believe his inflatable PFD failed to deploy and likely caused his death
INGLESIDE, Texas — Search and rescue operations were underway in Ingleside Saturday for a missing Kiewit scaffold builder who never resurfaced after falling into the water. Authorities responded to the scene around 2 p.m. Ingleside Police Department and the U.S. Coast Guard requested the Aransas Pass Police Marine Division to assist in search and rescue efforts.
Authorities say the scaffold worker fell from a rig that was docked at the Kiewit bulkheads inside the La Quinta ship channel near Ingleside On The Bay.
APPD Marine 1 and a Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Warden vessel conducted a search pattern with the help of a good Samaritan boater. Marine crews used a side scan sonar system during search efforts. The tool provides rescuers a visual picture of what lies on the sea floor. With that tool, crews were able to recover a male body from the water. The body confirmed to be that of the fallen worker.
The male victim was recovered at around 5:30 p.m. by an APPD and Commercial Salvage diver. The victim was said to be wearing all necessary safety equipment for working at height over water. Authorities believe his inflatable PFD failed to deploy and likely caused his death.
Precinct 6 San Patricio County Justice of the Peace arrived on scene and pronounced death and ordered an autopsy to be conducted. An investigation into the victims death is underway by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
