Rivalry renewed in Old Schoolz Alumni Basketball Game

An old rivalry returned to Victoria on Saturday. It was Stroman High School against Victoria High School, just as it previously was for three decades, in the Old Schoolz Alumni Basketball Game. This is the third year the former rivals have battled it out on the court.

First, the women competed in a shootout. After a tie, the competition went into a tiebreaker, with full-court layups. The tiebreaker also ended as a tie, with the Stingarettes and Raiders splitting bragging rights, 110-110.

The men’s game followed, with both former coaches, Mike Smith for Victoria High and Roy Blacknall for Stroman, leading the teams. The game was tied at halftime, but Stroman pulled ahead in the second half to beat Victoria High, 34-32. Raiders player Greg Ruiz was named MVP, and from the Stingarees, Chris Johnston was selected as defensive player of the game.
