Refugio’s Kelley selected 47th overall by White Sox

VICTORIA, Texas — On Thursday, Refugio standout Jared Kelley had his name called.

The right-handed pitcher was selected 47th overall by the Chicago White Sox on Friday in the second round of the MLB draft. Kelley was considered by many to be the nation’s top prep-school pitcher before the season began, but fell out of Wednesday’s first round in a draft that saw fewer high school prospects picked than has been the usual.

The Gatorade National High School Baseball Player of the Year, Kelley ended his high school career with a 32-3 record overall, a 0.43 ERA and 23 no-hit pitching appearances. Before his senior season was cut short, the right-hander posted a 3-0 record with a 0.00 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 12 innings.

Kelley had previously committed to the University of Texas.
