Pursuit ends when deputy crashes into trailer on Highway 71

Deputy pursuit leads to a crash at Highway 71

EL CAMPO, Texas – A Wharton County Precinct 2 deputy constable was released from the hospital Thursday night with no serious injuries after a pursuit.

According to Constable John A. Szymanski, the deputy was in pursuit of a motorcycle on Highway 71.

Szymanski said his deputy was in a routine patrol and ended up getting in a pursuit in the El Campo Area.

During the pursuit, a trailer was driving south on Highway 71 and the deputy crashed into the trailer, said Szymanski.

The individual driving the motorcycle was charged with evading a motor vehicle, tampering with evidence and taken into custody, according to Szymanski.

The individual driving the trailer was not hurt, confirmed Szymanski.

“The sheriff was ahead of me and sent a picture of the scene and when I saw the damage to the vehicle … I was thinking of my deputy and his well-being,” said Szymanski.

Szymanski said he was stunned to see his deputy with just minor injuries, but in a very good way.

This is still an ongoing investigation.

We will update this article with more details as the investigation progresses.

Szymanski did not provide the name of the deputy.
