Public invited to First Fire Academy Graduation on September 22
Victoria, Texas – The Victoria Fire Department is poised to graduate its first public fire academy class.
“This is our first-ever fire academy open to the public,” Fire Chief Tracy Fox said. “The goal of the program is to create an additional workforce development resource for the region.”
Thirteen people have completed the state-approved academy. The next step for the 11 men and two women will be to obtain certification with the Texas Commission on Fire Protection.
Most of the graduates are from the Golden Crescent area – Victoria County and surrounding counties.
“Our goal is to generate a local workforce for local fire departments,” Fox said, adding that the class went very well. “There was great student participation and effort throughout the program,” he said.
Training involved online learning and hands-on training once a week on weekends, allowing people who are employed to get involved. This class began the first week of June and concludes on September 8.
The graduation ceremony will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 22, at Fire Station No. 6, 1101 Ball Airport Road. Special recognition will be awarded to outstanding students. The public is invited to this free ceremony.
“This will be a wonderful opportunity for family and friends to come celebrate with these newly trained professional firefighters,” Fox said.
The next class is scheduled for January 2019.
