Public hearing date set for bills aimed at replenishing oyster population

CUERO, Texas – State representative Geanie Morrison along with the Texas House Committee on Culture, Recreation and Tourism will host a public hearing in Victoria.

The committee will meet to hear about two bills Morrison passed – House Bill 2321 and House Bill 1300. HB 2321 helps protect against the illegal harvesting of undersized oysters and HB 1300 allows for oyster aquaculture in Texas.

“We had some really bad actors that kept going in and harvesting those undersized oysters and the penalties were not high enough,” Morrison said. “We’ve lost a lot of our oysters because of overharvesting and so that will really help. And so hopefully within about a year we’ll have some oyster farms that we’ll start farming up along the coast and that will be a big economic boost for our coastal areas as well.”

The hearing will start at 1 p.m. on Thursday, February 20th at the Victoria College Emerging Technology Complex at 7402 Lone Tree Road.
