Port Lavaca H-E-B is helping to gain donations for Toys for Tots

H-E-B in Port Lavaca is having the Toys for Tots toy drive this weekend.

Toys for Tots started back in 1947 when a Marine decided to donate about 5,000 toys to children. The next year the marine corps decided to adopt the campaign. Over all these years this organization has impacted the lives of many children.

Many local stores have set up their toys for tots boxes to get more people to help make this holiday season special for those children in need.

“It’s been great. The community has really come together and provided a lot of toys for our community for the kids in need in this area,” said Port Lavaca H-E-B store director, Mario Chabana.

Last year the Port Lavaca Toys for Tots collection was able to provide toys for 186 children. So far this year there are 246 kids that will be receiving toy deliveries for Christmas.

“It feels really special and just seeing the community really contribute to this cause is really great, because the rest of the time during the year we hear really heartbreaking stories and it’s just brings a whole light to the end of the year and it’s just really special. I love that the community is coming together to give love to these kids,” said Jennifer Hahn, toys distributor.

Toys for Tots are still accepting applications for those families in need.
