Port Lavaca community comes together to assist families affected by shutdown

We keep counting the days of the partial government shutdown, and to many it may just be another day, but to families affected, it’s one more day living in uncertainty of how they’ll place their next meal on the table. Newscenter 25’s Griselda Perez spoke to local community members coming together to offer some help.

“W e’re coming together, and it’s making it to where we’re showing we can help each other.” says Jennifer Marek who along with military veteran daughter are collecting non perishable goods.

“I know some of these Coast Guard people, I know the families, and I may not have anybody in the coast guard, they feel like family.” Marek adds.

Using social media, the mother daughter duo drives to homes and pick up goods, which are then sorted and distributed to coast guard spouses. from snacks to toothbrushes- any small donation helps.

“So we’re running out meeting them at public places, at drop off places, and when we meet them and tell them what we’re doing they’re so ecstatic to be helping” says Stephanie Cavinder, Jennifer’s daughter.

As they collect for the second distribution, the goods will go towards a group of about 80 families in the Port Lavaca and Port O’Connor area.

“I know how it feels to know that there’s possibly not a paycheck coming. The best we can is to take care of them when they’re not being taken care of.” adds Cavinder.

Due to limitations on how donations can be received by members of the coast guard, they wanted to make sure families were taken care of. Here in the Crossroads, the sense of community is nothing new.

“During Harvey we all came together, and we made it through, and now this is another crisis with the coast guard.” says Jennifer.

Both are hoping this doesn’t last much longer, but are ready to continue helping.
