Port Lavaca BBQ restaurant wins awards for food quality and place to work
Port Lavaca BBQ restaurant recently mentioned in Texas Monthly and recognized for their unique tamale recipe.
Lately this semi-local barbeque restaurant has gotten a lot of buzz because their menu includes interesting options featuring a Mexican twist.
They are famous for their tamales and the owner, Lupe Nevarez, has even trained his daughter to take over running the restaurant.
It was established in 2019 along with his wife, Christine Nevarez, because they needed a little more money for retirement.
As a result, they came up with the idea to start a business selling authentic barbeque food in Port Lavaca.
So far, the restaurant has won several awards for selling a local product and for their originality.
Some options on the food menu are their blue corn tortillas, a semi-sweet barbeque sauce, a barbeque gumbo, and mac-n-cheese with your choice of meat added to it.
Nevarez said “The last one was 1 of the top 20 bites in the state of Texas. So Texas monthly has made their rounds and our tamale was one of the most memorable items that they’ve tasted all year. We’ve won for the county, best of Calhoun county, we’ve won 16 first place for awards which is anything from best BBQ, best restaurant, customer service, and many others that we’ve won.”
Their most unique item on the menu are the 4 types of tamales that is wrapped in an orange flour dough, instead of the traditional white dough for Mexican tamales. Plus each tamale has a quarter pound of meat in it.

In addition, this restaurant has been recognized as a great employer to work for, along with the rest of their recognition.
Consequently, the owners plan to open another restaurant in Bay City, TX within a month or two.
