Polar plunge causes a record of food distribution in March

Food bank of the Golden Crescent distributes more food after polar plunge.

VICTORIA, Texas – Recently, the Food Bank of the Golden Crescent has been distributing more food.

After the polar plunge hit Texas, the non-profit organization had to administer more food to people living in Victoria.

Robin Cadle, Food Bank President & CEO, has been working for the food bank since 2013 and she loves her job because it’s very rewarding to her everyday.

As she has been doing volunteer work for many years. Cadle is devoted to her job, which allows her to help others by feeding the community.

March hit a record of vulnerability for many people in the Crossroads, due to the polar plunge.

“I have volunteered for over 40 years, for different non-profits. I’ve been on different boards. The mission here is helping heal the heart of hunger, so I feel like my team and I do that by making sure that different agencies like Christ’s Kitchen or VCAM and our food pantries are different 11 counties have the food that they need to distribute to the families that are suffering from food insecurity,” Cadle said.

Last month, the food bank administered one million and 63 thousand pounds of food in our 11 county region. Cadle said some of the demographic in our population that’s really struggling right now are the seniors.

They have to decide whether they can feed themselves or continue buying their medicines.

“So it’s just a supplement that gets people through. Just like with the pandemic several people were without jobs. Unable to go to work, so without that income, they had to make choices. Do we by medicine, do we fix the car, do we buy food?” Cadle further explained.

The food bank used to administer 3 million pounds a year, but after hurricane Harvey, the demand went up to 5 million pounds a year.

In response to the record number made in March, Cadle suggests for people to at least start start stocking up on water, in order to prepare for hurricane season.
