UPDATE: Authorities have identified the fugitive, who was fatally shot by U.S. Marshal Wednesday, as 28-year-old JD Javier Lane of Victoria.
VICTORIA, Texas – On Wednesday, Jan. 5, around 2:30 p.m. the Victoria Police Department confirmed the U.S. Marshals attempted to catch a fugitive near Sam Houston Drive and N. Ben Jordan. As a result of this response, the fugitive then started running away. At some point, there was a confrontation that resulted in a fatal shooting.
Around 3:30 p.m. VPD posted on social media ‘North Bend Jordon is closed down from Crestwood Drive to Lawndale Avenue. Please avoid the area.’ VPD Police Chief Robert Arredondo said during an impromptu presser that marshals were responding to a fugitive who was sitting in the passenger’s side of the vehicle.
“This afternoon at 2:29 p.m. U.S. marshals assigned the Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Fugitive Task Force attempted to stop a vehicle with a known felon passenger. The subject exited the vehicle and ran from the officers. There was a marshal-involved shooting that resulted in one subject succumbing to their wounds. The Texas Rangers are handling the investigation and you should follow up with the Rangers with any additional questions you may have,” said Police Chief Arredondo.
The Victoria Fire Department arrived and pronounced one individual dead at the scene. Furthermore, a spokesperson with the U.S. Marshals said they are not releasing the names of deputies who resort to using force measures due to an ongoing investigation.
