One man shot and suspect in custody after an argument in Cuero

Cuero, TX – Cuero Police Officers were called to the 700 block of U.S. Hwy 72 (W. Heaton Street) regarding a male subject calling for help at 5:08 a.m. on Monday. On arrival Officers found a white man identified as Christopher Damon Smith, 31, suffering from a gunshot to the chest area. Cuero Emergency Medical Services was dispatched to the scene where Smith was stabilized and transported to Detar Hospital in Victoria. Smith has since been taken to SAMMC in San Antonio for further treatment.

Prior to being transported, Smith told officers he had been at a residence in the 700 Block of U.S. Hwy 72 (W. Heaton Street) where he had gotten into an argument with the resident. Nature of the argument is not known at the moment. Smith says the resident retrieved a shotgun and fired one time, striking Smith in the upper chest area.

Shooting suspect was identified as Damanscus Lewis Brown, 42, who resides in the 700 Block of U.S. Hwy 72 (W. Heaton Street). Members of Cuero Police Department Tactical Response Unit were called to the scene where Brown was arrested on a charge of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, transported to DeWitt County Jail without incident and awaiting arraignment.

Assisting Cuero Police Department were Deputies of DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office and officers from Yorktown Police Department, Yoakum Police Department and Cuero Fire Marshal’s Office.
