UHV men’s soccer sweeps the weekly Red River Conference honors.
Jose Munoz and Connagh Wilks sparked the University of Houston-Victoria men’s soccer team in their conference opener against Houston St. Thomas and their play didn’t go unrecognized.
Munoz and Wilks picked up Red River Athletic Conference honors on Monday with Munoz named the RRAC Offensive Player of the Week and Wilks, the RRAC Defensive Player of the Week.
Munoz came off the bench to record only the third UHV men’s soccer hat trick in guiding the Jaguars to a 4-1 victory over St. Thomas. He converted on all three of his shots in the contest. The hat trick was also the first for a UHV player in conference play.
Munoz, a 5-foot-8 senior forward from Houston, scored his first goal in the 44th minute on a header off a corner kick, and added a second goal in the 55th minute. He wrapped up the scoring with his final goal in the 63rd minute, just 18 seconds after the Jaguars had gone up 3-1.
Wilks, a 6-5 sophomore defender from Egham, England, played a key role in the Jaguars’ defensive back line that limited St. Thomas to just eight shots, including three on goal. The only goal allowed was off a penalty kick in the 62nd minute.
Wilks also assisted on one of the UHV goals and fired off one shot in the contest to be active on both ends of the field.
MANCHESTER, England (AP) – Jose Mourinho has stripped Paul Pogba of the Manchester United vice captaincy, but wouldn’t offer an explanation for the decision.
Mourinho insisted that it wasn’t because of a dispute with the World Cup-winning France midfielder who returned to United in 2016 for 105 million euros (then $116 million).
Mourinho told broadcaster Sky Sports that “the only truth is that I made the decision of Paul not to be the second captain any more but no fallout, no problems at all.”
Mourinho added that it was “just one decision that I don’t have to explain.” Pogba had appeared to criticize United’s style of play under Mourinho this weekend when he called on the team to attack more.
Pogba watched from the stands Tuesday as United was knocked out of the League Cup by second-tier side Derby.
