New Playgrounds in VISD

VICTORIA , Texas - Schools in Victoria are changing their playground to make them more accessible for all students.

For centuries playgrounds have been available to children but not those with special needs.

Shawna Currie  V.I.S.D. Director of Communications, says “these playgrounds are a part of our services to students with the Autism grant, which we were awarded a million dollars last year,".

A new playground is being built at all 14 Victoria Independent School Districts it was part of a grant that was awarded to the schools to help build an environment where children with autism can be included in a general educational setting.

“The grant is aimed at 3 to 9-year-olds and services, equipment, and different types of things within the school settings will help those students with autism,” said Currie.

The playground will be available so that all children with different abilities can play together.

“So anything that helps with mobile skills, communication skills, social, emotional skills and so certainly with them being out here on the playground all-inclusive with special needs, regular Ed students they are able to interact and have those interactions with each other,” said Currie.
