New Improvements, Programs Come To Victoria Boys and Girls Club
School’s out for summer, and that means children all over the Crossroads need something fun to do.
One of those places being the Victoria Boys and Girls Club, which is still in need of many repairs.
Hard-work and determination is what keeps Executive Director Adam Shugart on the path of success, as he plans to turn the Boys and Girls Club into a place where kids of all classes, race and gender can come together.
“The community deserves a Boys and Girls Club that kids can come to, and for me its just that simple,”said Shugart.
Its only been six months since Shugart took on his new role, and he is already taking the club into a new and exciting direction.
The club offers arts and crafts, sports, and games, and will soon add a music room with weekly lessons sponsored by Hall Electric.
“They’re also going to build for us a room that can become our technology center where we can use a Best Buy grant that we received to fill it full with computers, and the people over at VCS are going to help us get everything networked,” said Shugart.
Kristen Turek with Hall Electric says they jumped at the chance to help out because of Shugart’s passion for this club.
*Knowing that Adam was running the Boys and Girls club, I just wanted to reach out to him and see what we could help out with because I know he’s a great role model. I figured with him running it, it’s just going to be leaps and bounds above what it used to be and so I just wanted to jump on board and help”, said Turek.
Shugart has also applied for a City grant that could bring renovations the club desperately needs.
“The city development block grant would be a very big deal for us, it would allow us to go through the facility, and make necessary repairs and get parts of the building to be climate controlled,” said Shugart.
Shugart’s goal is to fix up the facility and get the community excited for the new and improved club.He also says he wants to give kids the opportunity to fall in love with these programs and succeed.
“Our goal is to really have a lasting impact on the community, as we have impact on these kids,” said Shugart.
Shugart says the community support behind him and the club has been overwhelming. He hopes to have a number of arts programs at the start of the school year.
