New Cuero Football Coach Hits The Ground Running

Alvarez Comes To Cuero From Copperas Cove

First full day on the job for the new football coach in the Gobbler Capital Of The World.

Jack Alvarez, approved by a 6-0 vote of the Cuero ISD board Thursday night to be Cuero’s new athletic director and head football coach. Alvarez comes from Copperas Cove, where he took that team to the playoffs in 2018. Before that, Alvarez guided Ennis to three straight state title games, winning state in 2014. In the 2000’s, Alvarez took over a Kirbyville team that had lost 26 straight games. He took them to state twice and won 111 games there in 11 seasons. He told me his first day in Cuero has been a whirlwind, and I asked him what most interested him in the Cuero job.

“It’s tradition and just the community support. You could feel that the first time I drove into town how excited everybody was about the Gobblers and Cuero football.”
