VICTORIA, Texas – Close to 100 people gathered at Deleon Plaza Tuesday morning for the 2022 National Peace Officers Memorial Ceremony.  The event honors law enforcement officers who were killed or disabled in the line of duty.

The names of fallen officers were read aloud.

Mark Jameson/First Deputy Chief of The Victoria Police Department: “I think this event is important for law enforcement, because each and every one of them do this job every day and they don’ t know whether they are going to come home.  Right and it’s a constant reminder to them. And it’s a time for us to honor those that have given the ultimate sacrifice.  And it’s also time for us to honor the families and the impact that it had on those.”

Nearly 60 years ago President Kennedy proclaimed May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15th falls As National Police Week.

Last year 620 officers died in the line of duty across the United States.

107 of those law enforcement officers were from Texas.
