National Peace Officer Memorial ceremony to take place Tuesday

VICTORIA, Texas – The Victoria Police Department and the Victoria County Sheriff’s Office will host a ceremony for National Peace Officers Memorial Day on Tuesday. The ceremony will take place from 9 to 10 a.m. at DeLeon Plaza, 101 N. Main Street.

President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day six decades ago. He also proclaimed the calendar week in which May 15 falls on as National Police Week.

National Peace Officers Memoria Day honors peace officers who were killed or disabled in the line of duty. National Police Week is recognizes the service and sacrifice of U.S. law enforcement officers annually.

Mayor Jeff Bauknight and County Judge Ben Zeller will read their proclamations at the ceremony. A representative will also read a list of fallen officers, including the Victoria County Sheriff’s Office’s Senior Deputy Phillip Baron Jr. Deputy Baron passed away on Sept. 24, 2001.

The event is free.
